Kiara ManningColleges Against Cancer is hosting its second annual “Chugs for the Jugs” bar crawl Thursday to raise money and awareness for breast cancer.
The bar crawl will take place on the Square from 6 to 11 p.m., and a $25 ticket will allow participants free cover and drink specials at participating bars. Frank and Marlee’s, Rooster’s Blues House, Funky’s Pizza & Daiquiri Bar, Round Table, The Blind Pig, The Corner, The Oxford Cellar, The Levee and Rafters are all participating in this year’s event.
“Money raised goes to the American Cancer Society to support some really wonderful programs they have to help people who are being treated for cancer,” Colleges Against Cancer PR assistant Megan Swartzfager said.
Colleges Against Cancer is a program designed and run by college students to help support the elimination of cancer through multiple ways on campus. The organization continues to educate people and raise awareness for cancer by hosting events, like Chugs for the Jugs and Relay For Life. All Colleges Against Cancer chapters are partnered with the American Cancer Society to raise awareness.
Colleges Against Cancer is also hoping to introduce new fundraisers this year.
“This is our second annual bar crawl, so we’re hoping for an even bigger crowd than last year,” PR chair Joseph Mason said. “Besides Chugs for Jugs, we are in the works with the Hope Lodge of Memphis to travel up and offer them aid to those who are staying there at some point during this fall or early spring.”
Mason also said its main event is Relay For Life, which is held in the spring, and the team has already started planning for the event.
“Being on a college campus, social media is a key factor of our promoting strategy,” Mason said. “We use Facebook pages and events and Instagram pictures to get the younger audience.”
Mason said his favorite event is Relay For Life because he loves seeing the happiness and enthusiasm on people’s faces when they get involved.
This is Mason’s first year being a part of Colleges Against Cancer. He is an aspiring oncologist and got involved with the organization because he supports what it does.
“I love working with Colleges Against Cancer, because I can see the difference I make in the fight against cancer with every dollar we raise,” he said. “The American Cancer Society is one of the leading organizations in cancer research and treatment, and by supporting them, I am supporting what I want to devote my life to.”
