Square Magazine, the University of Mississippi’s first and only student-run fashion magazine, released their 2024 edition titled “Consciously Modern” in an unveiling event on April 30 at 6 p.m. at the Powerhouse.
The cover reveal party is a yearly tradition for Square Magazine. This is the organization’s fourth cover reveal party, and this year’s event was sponsored by the Yoknapatawpha Arts Council.
Junior journalism major Emma Greene and senior elementary education major Elena Ossoski are the co-editors-in-chief of the publication. From writing to photography and editing articles, they have worked together with the Square Magazine staff to make this year’s publication a success.
Greene gave a glimpse into what the magazine holds.
“It’s an exploration of American designers in the impact that Hollywood and American music (have had) and really just the melting pot of America has had on fashion,” Green said.
Arnsdorff shared what this theme means to her and her friends from other countries.
“(The theme) is so unique to me,” Arnsdorff said. “It really shows being a part of Ole Miss itself, or the pride of the South. Being a very American school and being able to express that through fashion is something that’s so cool, and kind of important, like culturally. I work with a lot of international students, and they can see the magazine itself and understand the American fashion clearly.”
Arnsdorff elaborated a little further on this year’s theme.
“(It) was inspired by the cultural phenomena surrounding Americana,” Ossoski said. “The cover captures the spirit of individuality and simplicity that has helped define American style for so many years.”
The Powerhouse was decorated with warm glowing lights and carefully placed arrangements of flowers, polaroids of their models and stickers with the Square Magazine logo on tables. There was a backdrop made out of photos reflecting the theme for guests to take pictures in front of.
Kirsten Arnsdorff, a sophomore integrated marketing communications major from Pass Christian, Miss. attended the event and shared her enthusiasm.
“(The event) is so cute,” Arnsdorff said. “I love the idea of how everything was put together by pictures, everyone seems so energetic, and I just love it.”
Ossoski expressed that working together with consistency and harmony is an essential aspect to everyone working on the magazine. Every piece added during the yearlong production of the magazine is intentional.
“We always have all hands on deck to plan and set up our cover reveal parties,” Ossoski said. “Our business team takes the lead, but everyone on Square (Magazine) is always more than willing to help with decorations and party prep. This year, we are so grateful to get to collaborate with the Yoknapatawpha Arts Council and host this year’s reveal at the Powerhouse. We are looking forward to working with them again in the near future!”
Ossoki spoke about the importance of Square Magazine to herself and the community.
“We love bringing everyone together to celebrate our annual print issue,” Ossoski said. “Since we only get to make one tangible copy of the magazine each year, we find it is important to bring the community together to celebrate our team’s hard work throughout the whole year.”
Arnsdorff shared her opinions on the newest edition of the magazine.
“I feel like the magazine, itself, looks great,” Arnsdorff said. “It really does express us in general as college students.”
