Confederate monument relocation plans complete, pending MDAH and IHL approval

In an email to students, faculty and staff, Interim Chancellor Larry Sparks announced that plans to relocate the Confederate monument to the Confederate cemetery are complete.

The university submitted their plans and drawings to the Mississippi Department of Archives and History on August 27, following five months of deliberations with contractors and MDAH officials.

Now, the decision rests in the hands of the MDAH. If the plans are approved, the decision will be submitted to the Institutions of Higher Learning (IHL) to make the final decision on whether or not the monument will in fact be relocated.

Sparks added that if approved by IHL, the university will contract an outside firm to facilitate the removal.

This is a developing story, any new information will be added as it arrives.
