Sarah HendersonLeah Davis and Barron Mayfield have advanced to the runoff election in the race for Associated Student Body president after none of the three candidates gained a majority of the student body’s votes.
Mayfield won 38.79% of the vote compared to Davis’s 32.08%.
Mayfield, a junior public policy leadership major from Lubbock, Texas, based his campaign on pushing for student representation on the state college board.
Davis, a junior psychology major from Tupelo, has centered her presidential initiative around making ASB more diverse and addressing mental health issues on campus.
Davis and Mayfield defeated Tom Fowlkes, who received 26.71% of the vote.
Fowlkes, a junior public policy leadership and accountancy major from Memphis, identified his ASB objective to engage with students more through Twitter polls and communicate with students more.
Sarah Doty and Charlotte Shackelford will also head to a runoff for the vice presidential race.
Doty garnered 28.28% of the vote, and Shackelford received 30.48%.
Doty, a public policy leadership major from Brookhaven, said she wants to focus on improving the everyday lives of students by focusing on issues in parking, housing and facilities on campus.
Shackelford, a junior political science major from Mandeville, Louisiana, said her main goal is to build the relationship between senators and their constituents, which she hopes will result in increased accessibility to ASB for students.
In the only other contested election, Liza Boyer defeated Brynn Trahan for the office of Judicial Chair. Boyer, a junior political science major from Houston, Mississippi, received 63.24% of the vote and has served on the ASB Judicial Council for the past year.
Elections for the offices of Attorney General, Treasurer and Secretary were uncontested.
Austin Fiala won the race for Attorney General, and will begin his second-term following his appointment last fall. Gianna Schuetz, who has served as interim Treasurer after Jonathan Cox stepped down in November, was elected to the same position. Hannah Chauvin, a junior political science major from Columbus, Ohio, was elected as Secretary.
The runoff election will take place on Thursday, when students can vote from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on their myOleMiss accounts through the “Get Involved” tab.
