In what Oxford Police Department has called a “critical incident,” local, state and federal agents arrived at South Lamar Blvd. in front of Hooper Hollow cottages.
Hunter Carlstrom, a man wanted in connection with a murder in Arkansas earlier this month, was shot and killed by U.S. Marshals in the incident on Friday morning when a deputy marshal was attempting to execute a warrant, according to the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Olivia Ross, an exercise science major who lives at Hooper Hollow, was on a run in her neighborhood when the incident occurred.
“I was near the stop sign where Oxford Farms is and I heard the loud noises. I didn’t know they were gunshots; I thought it was just a muffler backfiring or something. So I stopped and I took my earbuds out,” she said. “I didn’t see the shooting go down, and I heard screaming. Then I saw just a car speed off. When I realized that was a gunshot and not a car backfiring, I ran to the women’s clinic and hid in there.”
Ross said she did not leave the clinic until she felt it was safe enough to go outside. She added that police have coordinated with Hooper Hollow management to keep her and other residents informed.
The MBI has taken over the investigation.
