Online DeskMusical theater fans are celebrating the news that the story of Alexander Hamilton is being made into a movie to reach audiences in 2021.
Lin-Manuel Miranda, creator of “Hamilton: An American Musical,” released the news that Walt Disney Co. will produce the recording.
The movie was filmed in The Richard Rodgers Theater with the original cast members in 2016. Production happened before the cast left the show to pursue other projects.
The musical has been performed since 2015 and tours in multiple cities and countries.
In an interview with Variety, Miranda discussed the film’s accessibility to those who did not see it with the original cast. The original cast included Miranda as Alexander Hamilton, Phillipa Soo as Eliza Hamilton and Jonathan Groff as King George.
“I’m so proud of what (director) Tommy Kail has been able to capture in this filmed version of ‘Hamilton’ — a live theatrical experience that feels just as immediate in your local movie theater,” Miranda said.
Disney CEO Bob Iger expressed how important the original cast recording was.
“All who saw it with the original cast will never forget that singular experience,” Iger said in a statement. “And we’re thrilled to have the opportunity to share this same Broadway experience with millions of people around the world.”
This is not the first time Miranda has worked with Disney. He appeared in “Mary Poppins Returns,” and “Moana.”
The recording of “Hamilton,” is unlike Miranda’s “In the Heights,” adaptation coming out later this year, where the cast features fresh faces instead of the original cast.
