Former Ole Miss Women’s Basketball guard Marquesha Davis was selected in the first round of the WNBA draft by the New York Liberty on Monday, April 15.
She joins star guard Sabrina Ionescu, four-time NCAA national champion and WNBA MVP forward Breanna Stewart and 6-foot-11 center Han Xu. Davis, who did nothing but increase her draft stock in her final year with Ole Miss, projects to be a good rotation piece for the Liberty, as she is an elite defender and can also put the ball in the hoop.
Davis is the second Ole Miss player in three years to be selected in the first round of the WNBA Draft, joining former Lady Rebel Shakira Austin, who was picked third overall in 2022.
Davis is coming off of a stellar season in which she averaged 14 points and five rebounds per game. During her tenure in Oxford, a place she transferred to after a brief stint at Mississippi State, Davis played a vital role in making Ole Miss Women’s Basketball what it is today.
At 6 feet tall, a height that is slowly becoming the norm in the WNBA for guards, Davis is lauded for excellent handling, only averaging a little over one turnover per game last season while being one of the most aggressive defenders in the country. As the figurehead for a stout Ole Miss defense, Davis averaged two steals per game last year.
Rebel fans will have to follow Davis throughout training camp to see if she does, in fact, make the Liberty roster. Opening day for the WNBA season is Tuesday, May 14.
