Ole Miss Men’s Basketball and Head Coach Chris Beard made an early splash in this offseason’s transfer portal when former All-Southern Conference forward Mikeal Brown-Jones publicized his commitment via Instagram on Saturday, April 13.
Brown-Jones, who averaged just under 19 points per game along with 7.5 rebounds per game, was rated as the No. 83 player in the transfer portal by 247Sports.
The IMG Academy product comes to Oxford as a fifth-year player after playing at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro for the previous two years after another two-year stint at Virginia Commonwealth University in his freshman and sophomore years.
After not finding a place in the rotation at VCU, Brown-Jones transferred into the UNCG program and made an immediate impact, averaging around 15 points per game between his junior and senior seasons.
The 6-foot-8-inch player joins the Ole Miss program with one year of eligibility remaining. If his previous production is any sign of what is to come, Brown-Jones might be just what the Rebels were missing last season. With his frame and play style, he poses a defensive threat –– averaging just under a block per game last season. He also has shown his skills as an efficient three-point shooter, as he shot a respectable 43% from beyond the arc.
With many more players rumored to be making visits to Oxford and many more reported to have interest from Beard and the program, Brown-Jones is, in all likelihood, only the beginning of a very active portal season for Ole Miss Basketball.
